Radioactive Scrap Management - Guidance for Foundries

Foundries all over the world provide a crucial function in the recycling of scrap metal. While there are many benefits to recycling scrap, one inherent risk is unknowingly melting a radioactive source.  This comprehensive guide provided by the American Foundry Society aims to help the industry by providing resources and information to prevent and quickly respond to radioactive scrap contamination. Although radioactive scrap incidents are rare in the United States, it is important to stay informed and proactive to avoid an incident that could potentially endanger the health and safety of employees, as well as the general public. Should an incident occur, foundry staff must respond quickly and implement appropriate actions.  This guidance document is intended to help the industry train appropriate staff and provide resources to assist with making these decisions in a timely manner.
