During the April congressional recess, AFS member company Oil City Iron Works (OCIW), Corsicana, Texas, opened its doors to host a tour of its foundry for Senator John Cornyn (R-TX) and Representative Joe Barton (R-TX), to make legislators more aware of both the benefits metalcasters bring to communities and the key challenges facing America's metalcasting industry - including host of new federal regulations and global competition. Eric Meyers, OCIW President discussed in detail the challenges foundries will face trying to comply with OSHA’s silica rule. Meyers noted about the tour that, “this was an ideal opportunity to demonstrate 'Made in America' and our company’s commitment to quality castings for the energy and industrial sectors. OCIW employs over 150 employees.
In addition to serving on the Senate Finance, Intelligence, and Judiciary Committees, Sen. Cornyn serves as the Majority Whip, the second-highest ranking position in the Senate Republican Conference. Representative Barton is a key member of the House Energy and Commerce Committee.
Members of Congress will be back in their states over Memorial Day and July 4 recess, as well as the entire month of August. This is an ideal time for foundries and suppliers across the country to host their representatives and senators and allow them to see firsthand what it takes to make castings.
