The Technical Publications Editor is responsible for proofreading and fact-checking articles for the International Journal of Metalcasting. Editing technical books, papers, articles, and related materials published by the American Foundry Society (AFS), either independently or in collaboration with volunteer committees.This role ensures content meets AFS’s editorial standards and supports the Society’s mission and strategic goals. The editor works closely with authors, project liaisons, and internal teams to deliver high-quality publications for sale or distribution to members and the public.
Key Accountabilities:
- Proofread and fact-check articles for the International Journal of Metalcasting and AFS Transactions to ensure grammatical accuracy, consistency, and adherence to editorial guidelines.
- Edit technical manuscripts submitted by individuals or committees for new or revised publications, ensuring clarity, accuracy, consistency, and alignment with AFS standards.
- Collaborate with project liaisons and authors to verify content and secure necessary materials to complete each publication.
- Partner with the Vice President of Metalcasting Technical Services to prioritize and manage the editorial workflow, ensuring timely completion of projects.
- Support editing needs across departments, including the Technical and EHS (Environmental Health and Safety) teams, for special articles and technical projects.
- Maintain and update submission guidelines and formatting standards for authors and contributors.
- Keep up to date with information that affects the in-house editing process.
- Travel annually to the AFS Annual Meeting to support technical publications and engage with stakeholders.
- Perform other editorial, record-keeping, and project duties as assigned.
Required Skills or Experience:
- A bachelor’s degree is required; a minor in journalism or communications is preferred.
- Strong technical background in metallurgy, materials science, or metalcasting-related fields.
- Minimum of three years of experience editing scientific or technical publications, journals, or magazines.
- Proficient in applying editorial standards, especially the Chicago Manual of Style.
- Excellent organizational, multitasking, and communication skills.
- Ability to work independently, manage deadlines, and collaborate across departments.
- Familiarity with layout or publishing software is a plus, but not required. ·
- Must be fluent in written and spoken English.
